The skin is the largest organ of the body and an important barrier for preventing the invasion of pathogens, the unintentional uptake of external substances and the uncontrolled loss of water and solutes.
The barrier function of the skin is principally fulfilled by the epidermis and the product of its terminal differentiation, the horny layer. Detailed knowledge about epidermal barrier function is important for the understanding and treatment of skin diseases as well as for cosmetical and biotechnological applications.
E2BRN is a network and meeting point for scientists from European countries interested in a variety of aspects of epidermal barrier function. We aim to provide a forum for exchange of knowledge, technology, ex vivo and in vivo epidermal barrier models, and other aspects of epidermal barrier research to facilitate collaborations and innovations.
